INTRODUCTION AND PROPAGATION OF THE CINNAMOMUM JENSENIANUM

  • Cinnamomum jensenianum Hand.-Mazz., a evergreen tree which grows wild at 500—1600 meters in several provinces of China. has been successfully introduced to the Botanic Garden of Wuhan Institute of Botany, Academia Sinica. The factors which cause dormancy of the seeds exist in the outer part of the embryo.Experiments to break the dormancy of seeds have been done by soaking them in flowing water, by treating them with GA and KN and by stratifying the seeds under low temperature. The germinating percentage of seeds attains 85-89% when the seeds were stratified under 3-5℃, the seeds will germinate under 15-30℃. but the optimum temperature is 20℃. one-year-old seedling trees should be grown under shade in summer and prevent them from freezing in winter, This species has rather strong adaptibility and growth quite well in Wuhan area.
